Emerging Artist Award
Ulrik López moved to Puerto Rico in 1997 with his family to settle in San Juan. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, he would constantly visit his homeland of Mexico. Ulrik began his university studies in 2009 at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico (EAP) in Old San Juan and in 2012 he was accepted into the art program, Soma Summer, at SOMA in Mexico City. In 2013 he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BFA in sculpture and with a minor degree in industrial design from Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico.
That same year Lopez took part in WARP’s program in Genk, Belgium. He later returned to Puerto Rico to start a year of independent studies at a program called La Práctica in Beta-Local, Old San Juan. López has been included in exhibitions of EAP, Antiguo Arsenal de la Marina Española, Museo Casa Blanca, La Respuesta, Área: Lugar de Proyectos, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, in Conarte La Fundidora, and alternative spaces in Puerto Rico and Mexico. He also has published works in the newspaper El Vestíbulo. López was the last edition of BBVA and MACG: Arte Actual grantee. and currently is Alice C. Cole fellow for Emerging Artists
