Mid-Career Artist Award

Wb Richard Garet

Magdalena Atria was born in 1966 in Santiago, Chile, where she currently lives and works. She has a BFA from Universidad Católica de Chile and an MFA from Parsons School of Design (New York).

She has been the recipient of several grants, among them a Fulbright Scholarship and a Chilean National Fund for Arts and Culture Grant.

"My work addresses, from a variety of media and materials, the conflict between individual desires and collective structures. From visual and material situations that I draw from the social context, I build paintings, installations and objects that speak to us of the multiplicity of ways in which the dimensions of the ideal and the real intertwine in art and in life.

Some constants in my work are the tension between the rational and the emotional, the personal and the collective, the existential and the banal, the formal and the symbolic; notions that I explore with a particular emphasis on the materials and processes used, those that belong to specific uses and traditions and carry meanings and associations related to those origins.” – Magdalena Atria.

Her work has been shown in venues such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA (MOCA); The Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas; the VI Mercosur Biennial (Brazil), the XI Cuenca Biennial (Ecuador); Chateau de Tours (France); Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Chile); Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende (Chile); among others.
