CIFO-Ars Electronica Award Exhibition

Linz, Austria | September 7 - September 29, 2022

After a long hiatus in our usual selection and exhibition processes for our CIFO Grants & Commissions Program Winners in 2020 and 2021, the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) is very pleased to announce a new era in our selection processes and a return to exhibition operations!

As part of CIFO’s 20th Anniversary celebrations in 2022, we are thrilled to begin this new chapter in our organization in collaboration with Ars Electronica: a cultural, educational and scientific institute based in Linz, Austria, specializing in the fusion of art, technology and society. As an institution, Ars Electronica have been analyzing and commenting on the digital revolution since 1979 - developing projects, strategies and competencies for digital transformation since 1996 together with artists, scientists, technologists, designers, developers, entrepreneurs and activists from all over the world.

This global collaboration is proud to announce the 1st Season of the CIFO-Ars Electronica Awards and its correlating exhibition in Linz, Austria: A Parallel (R)evolution | Digital Art in Latin America.

Five artists working in technology from across Latin America will debut major new commissions this September at the Lentos Art Museum, as part of the Ars-Electonica Festival, the major international platform for the intersection of arts, technology, and society. On view September 7 to 29, 2022, EXHIBITION TITLE brings together commissions by the 2022 recipients of the inaugural CIFO-Ars Electronica Award, Dora Bartilotti (Mexico), Electrobiota Collective (Argentina/Mexico), Thessia Machado (Brazil, based in United States), Amor Muñoz (Mexico), and Ana Elena Tejera (Panama, based in France), whose works reflect the ways in which Latin American artists are employing technology such as electronic textiles and AI computers as mediums to explore individual and collective identity, culture, and history.

Launched this year, the CIFO-Ars Electronica Awards advance the practices of emerging and mid-career Latin American artists working with technology in the field of new media and digital art, providing up to $30,000 per recipient to develop a major new commission. In addition to the exhibition the resulting works join the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO)'s renowned permanent collection of modern and contemporary art, with a special focus on Latin American art. Offering insights into the innovative practices of Latin American artists working today, tthe exhibition extends the impact of the Awards by bringing the recipients’ works to a global audience through the international platform of Ars Electronica.
