The Line Within the Space
The workshop La línea en el espacio (The line within the space), conceived by the artist Gustavo Pérez Monzón, was organized by CIFO, in collaboration with Sweetwater Elementary School, Miami, Florida. April-May 2016.
The dot, the line and the space (bidimensional and tridimensional) were the main themes in this workshop, inspired by the installation works Hilos and Vilos from Gustavo Pérez Monzón, with which the participants were able to interact. A variety of exercises served as starting point to cover from the postulates of the Euclidian geometry to more complex issues, such as the notions of demarcation, stability, weight, tension and their meanings. Through educational games, the participating kids created patterns, where its structure depends on the balance between rigid and stretched elements. The artistic language and practices were an effective medium of communication to think about multiple topics and, at the same time, to reinforce educational principles such as motivation, dialogue of the student with their environment, and the playfulness and experiential of that learning relation with the world.
With the participation of a group of third grade students and the collaboration of their parents, the workshop took place in exhibition rooms of CIFO Art Space and the courtyard of Sweetwater Elementary School, and was due to educational curatorial proposal by Eugenio Valdes Figueroa and the school’s art teacher Marlene Martínez. The line within the space was part of the related events programming during the exhibition Gustavo Pérez Monzón: Tramas. This workshop would not have been possible without the support of the Principal of the Sweetwater Elementary School, Janet Olivera. CIFO also thanks Mabel Morales- District Supervisor and Alina Rodriguez - Curriculum Support Specialist, from the Visual Art Division, at the Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
